Most western homes have at least one PC in them, most are online and many people are comfortable with computer technology. 

This has given rise to "convergence technologies" The merging of PC's and the IT world with home automation, music & media. 

The most public of all technologies to date being Microsoft's media centre which stores your movies, music and photos all in one place.

A cynic would describe the Media centre as a vehicle for vendors to get the PC out of the study where the kids use it and into the lounge where the whole family will use it.  "if we get 'em to use it as a television, think of how much more money we can make!"
